DRAMA unfolded last night around an international hockey championship being co-hosted by Malaysia and Singapore, as a South Korean reserve goalkeeper was quarantined over concerns about H1N1.

Malaysian organisers of the 2009 Standard Chartered Bank FIH Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup announced, in a press release issued at 8.39pm, that 20-year-old Kang Hyun Woo had been warded at Johor’s Sultanah Aminah Hospital as a precaution, after coming down with a fever two days ago.

But just after midnight, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the world governing body, issued its own release - calling the Malaysian statement “premature”.

“Different examinations are taking place and it is too early to comment on the cause of the illness and the exact symptoms,” said tournament director Bjorn Isberg. Only FIH releases should be treated as “official information”.

The Junior World Cup kicked off Sunday, with the final scheduled in Johor on June 21. It features the world’s top 20 junior hockey teams. Pool A and C matches are played in Johor, Pool B and D in Singapore.

The South Korean team have been in Johor for over a week, winning two matches in Pool C. They play Spain tomorrow, and look likely to qualify for the medal round to be held in Johor and Singapore.

If Kang tests positive for the flu bug, this would be the first H1N1 case at an international sports event. The Singapore Hockey Federation’s deputy president Kuldip Singh said the tournament would continue “as per normal” and it would work with relevant parties to ensure a safe tourney.
