MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine competitors in the first Asian Youth Games are ready for action in the multi-event sports tournament which opens Monday in Singapore.
“Our athletes are in high spirits and they are raring to compete," said Philippine Chief of Mission Col. Cesar Binag, who is also the president of the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines.
There are 59 Filipino athletes competing in Singapore, including 18 football players who are now back in the country after playing a Singapore selection to a 2-2 tie at the Jalan Besar Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Event organizers were forced to quarantine the RP soccer team after one player tested positive for Influenza A(H1N1). Like Hong Kong, whose three members of the soccer were found to have the flu, the Philippines was removed from the official list of participants.
Despite this, the remaining members of the Philippine delegation are ready to compete in athletics, aquatics (diving and swimming), basketball 3-on-3, beach volleyball, bowling, shooting and table tennis.
Ninety gold medals are at stake in the tournament and six of these medals will be up for grabs in athletics and two in diving on Day 1 on Tuesday.
Tuesday's gold medal competitions are in boys’ 3-meter springboard and girls platform in diving and boys’ pole vault, discus throw and 1500m run, and girls’ high jump, long jump and 1500m. – GMANews.TV
