MANILA, Philippines - Having fallen on hard times, illegal-drug dealers have resorted to adulterating their methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) with other chemicals that could make up a potentially fatal concoction.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) made this claim Friday as it reiterated its appeal to the public to avoid using addictive drugs.

"Ang latest discovery ko mabigat, kulang ang supply pero mahal. Ina-adulterate. Ang one kilo ginagawang 10 kilos. Kung anu-ano ang hinahalo, it can be fatal," PDEA chief Dionisio Santiago said in an interview on dzXL radio.

[We discovered recently that drug rings are dealing with low supply and thus more expensive. So they adulterate the drugs with other chemicals to make one kilo of pure shabu into 10 kilos of the impure substance. The mix can be fatal.]
However, Santiago did not say what chemicals were being used in the adulterated shabu mix.

On the other hand, Santiago said he will seek a dialogue with ulamas (Muslim teachers) after learning that many barong-barongs (shanties) used by some drug dealers lead to mosques.

"Di natin akalain (na) meron silang connecting exit sa kabila. At ang kabila ang mosque. Kung pumasok sa mosque, sacred yan [We were surprised that some shanties had a connecting exit that led to mosques that are considered sacred ground]," he said.

Earlier, PDEA operatives seized drugs and paraphernalia from the house of "shabu tiangge" operator Amin Boratong in Pasig City.

Santiago said that he cannot blame local police and politicians for the continued operation of the drug ring in the area, this time.

The problem is that these drug rings can afford lawyers who know how to do their thing. The Philippine National Police has good lawyers, but in the end, they cannot match the resources of the drug dealers, he said. - GMANews.TV
