BEIJING - China has shut down nearly 4,000 milk collection stations for failing to meet safety standards, nine months after tainted milk products were blamed for making 300,000 babies sick and killing six children, the official Xinhua news agency said yesterday.
The authorities had inspected all the nation's 20,393 milk stations and total of 3,908 stations, which collect fresh milk from local farmers and sell it to dairy companies, had been shut down due to poor hygiene standards or a lack of equipment.
The collection stations came under close scrutiny as it emerged that middle-men had been adding melamine to diluted milk to make it appear higher in protein content. The incident led to Chinese dairy product recalls and bans around the world, and the former boss of Sanlu, the firm at the heart of the scandal, was jailed for life.
