Someone’s gotta say something someday… this is one of the ‘voices’ that we should be hearing. Speak up, will you?

I have noticed recently that there are more houseflies than usual in food centres and eateries.
Take for example, the VariNice open-air food court at Sembawang Drive. The cleaners diligently clear away the plates as soon as customers leave, but it is now a common sight to see diners having to wave away flies while they are still having their meal.
Stallholders too have to keep trying to “fan” away the flies.
It got so exasperating for me that I recently called up the National Environment Agency (NEA) to give my feedback and to ask if they could find out why there were so many houseflies.
The officer who spoke to me said NEA had conducted a check on the food court the week before as the agency had also noticed an increase in houseflies.
They said they had advised the food court management to step up pest control measures and general housekeeping. The officer also said other eateries were also having this problem, which could be due to “climate change”.
Some stallholders cover only their chilli and other sauces. How safe is it for flies to be hovering over exposed food and crockery?
